Hilly Logan County, which boasts Ohio’s highest elevation, was named for General Benjamin Logan. Its area is 458.44 square miles, populatin 46,005, and its county seat is Bellefontaine (French, “beautiful fountain.” It does, in fact, have a fountain . . . with a pineapple on it). Bellefontaine is one of America’s “Tree Cities,” and is also notable for being the site of America’s first concrete street (Court Avenue) and shortest street (McKinely Ave.). For taphophiles, there is a connoisseur’s pick of small and private cemeteries, free of ghost stories, though Herrod Cemetery does boast its own legend of Andrew Hellman, the “hatchetman” (busted by the Headstoners).
