Franklin County is named after the rather well-known Benjamin Franklin, and its county seat, Columbus (named for Christopher Columbus), is also the state capital. It (the county, though Columbus practically takes it up entirely) has an area of 539.87 square miles and a population of about 1,086,978. Columbus is the home of our alma mater, Green Lawn Cemetery, and has a rich cemetery history, ranging from Green Lawn and the aloof and unconnected Greenlawn Abby to the eerie state asylum. Many delicious details of these sites can be explored in Andrew Henderson’s book, Forgotten Columbus. Franklin County boasts so much by the way of cemeterial content that Grounds & Grounds treats it independently of the other state quadrants.
